The Instrument's Family

The Giannini guitar workshop was established in Brazil in the year 1900 by the Italian luthier Tranquillo Giannini. His ambition to build fine acoustic instruments in Brazil led to a long and successful tradition of guitar making still carried on today.

The Craviola, with its unusual shape and unique sound, has inspired generations of guitarists and music lovers. The name was intended to reflect the perception that it sounded something like a cross between a harpsichord (Cravo in Portuguese), and a Brazilian Viola.

It all started with a simple idea from acclaimed guitarist Paulinho Nogueira, who invented the Craviola in 1969. A designer and painter before he became a musician, Nogueira won the prestigious design award at the "Salao Primavera" in Campinas. Later, when he became a guitarist, he was inspired to design an instrument unlike any other. He made a few drawings and showed them to his good friend and noted Brazilian guitar manufacturer Giorgio Giannini. Giannini thought the instrument was a great idea, and in time it was being exported to the United States, Canada, and England….

Many musicians have fallen in love with the Craviola and helped to create its fame and identity across various music styles. Among the most famous are Luis Bonfá, José Feliciano, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) and the current Giannini endorsers Romero Lubambo, Jeff Linsky and Nando Lauria (Pat Metheny Group).
