Princes Amongst Men was a widely celebrated book by New Zealander Garth Cartwright, a book that explored the music and culture of Roma communities in Serbia, Macedonia, Romania, and Bulgaria. This sampler serves as a sort of soundtrack to that book, as well as a showcase for the range of vibrant musics coming from Gypsies in the Balkans. Taraf de Haidouks, Boban Markovic, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Toni Iordache, Kocani Orkestar, Esma Redzepova, and several lesser known but equally dynamic artists and ensembles.
