Papa Levante ~ Tomalacaté ~ CD
A quarter century after Franco’s death, Spain produces the ultimate proof of democratic consolidation and cultural modernization: a Flamenco "girl-band.” A sort of Flamenco Spice Girls, Papa Levante’s six young lady members make a quirky fashion statement that lies somewhere between Flamenco and Neo-Psychodelic. Their music, however, is composed and produced by Jose Miguel Evora (Sal Marina) and performed by the likes of Jose Antonio Rodriguez on guitar, and is really quite good. This is a musical niche that makes many an eyeball roll, but if you’re into it, you’ll enjoy Papa Levante. And if you’re not but find these sorts of cultural phenomena interesting, you might still enjoy some detached observation.
