Javier Zamora ~ Aire del Mediterraneo ~ CD
Aptly titled, Zamora's guitar sounds as if it were blowing off the Mediterranean on a hot, sun-drenched day, carrying with it the fragrance of the sea. The compositions are a bit of a throwback (Flamenco retro) to the 70's and 80's, and the guitar sounds of Enrique de Melchor, Rafael Riqueni, Pepe Habichuela, and earlier Paco de Lucia, all of whom Zamora freely paraphrases. But he always provides a fresh twist on the music he echoes, and the sound is of the recording is excellent. So while this may not be a cutting edge record, it is one that's hard not to enjoy, one where feeling dwarfs technique, and flavor makes complexity superfluous. Tangos, Fandangos, Solea, Tanguillos, Alegrias, Rumba, Zapateado, Buleria, and El Hada de los Vientos. Recommended.
