Ballet Nacional de Cuba ~ Don Quixote ~ DVD
Founded in 1948, Cuba's Ballet Nacional has produced several generations of great dancers, becoming a popular institution loved by everyday Cuban people in much the same way that ordinary Italians are passionate about their operas. It is remarkable that such a classical European expression should take such deep root on a Caribbean island better known for its Son and its Salsa, and thrive in the political climate of these last decades. Most credit prima ballerina and founder Alicia Alonso, whose vision and tenacity have shaped and shepherded this miracle company right up to today. Now 80, it was Alonso who choreographed this staging of Don Quixote, which has received rave press reviews around the world. Filmed at the Grand Palais in Paris, with the music of Ludwig Minkus performed by the Orquesta Sinfonica del Gran Teatro de Havana. 127 minutes, in high definition, with music in stereo and Dolby 5.1. DVD extras include an interview with Alicia Alonso, rehearsal footage, and highlights from other productions by the company.
