El Angel (Various Artists) ~ El Angel vol.6: El Rocio - La Ultima Caravana ~ DVD
El Angel is a series of six programs that Ricardo Pachon (producer of Camaron, Tomatito, Tabletom, Pata Negra, Lole & Manuel, and many others) filmed/recorded in and around Sevilla in 1984, and which documented both traditional and modern/fusion Flamenco being performed at the time, much of it in very informal settings. Issued here for the first time on DVD. Volume 6 takes you along on the pilgrimage to El Rocio, giving you an insider's view of the road to the shrine (people travel here on foot, horseback, and caravans pulled by oxen, tractors... from all over Spain and as far afield as Russia, northern Europe...), the 24-hour fiesta that takes place at the grounds, the "floating" of the legendary "Virgin of the Dew," and more. Some nice performance snippets and a great soundtrack featuring Romero San Juan, Miguel Maguesin, Joaquin Pareja Obregon, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, Coro de la Hermandad de Triana, Jesus Bola, Paquita Rico, El Priripi, and others. About an hour long, in Spanish with English and French subtitles, the DVD is multi-format and will play on any American or European DVD player, and even offers Dolby 5.1 sound.
